“Safe Communities” Training and Employment Project
The “Safe Communities” Training and Employment Project partners believe in Wilmington – every citizen, in every neighborhood. We believe that Wilmington has an untapped wealth of talent and skills within its communities, just waiting to be discovered and unleashed.
The Safe Communities Project will employ and work with individuals in the Southbridge and Eastside Communities. Fifteen (15) low-income residents, ages 18-35, will be selected to work in an intensive 48-week program designed to engage community members in research work that will help identify challenges and solutions to addressing crime and violence in the community – from the community's perspective. Participants will be exposed to the field of research and develop skills in data collection, data analysis, interviewing, and presentation skills. No prior work experience is required and individuals with a criminal background are encouraged to apply.
Through the Participatory Action Research (PAR) model, participants will be trained to serve as “community researchers,” seeking out information and opening dialogue with Wilmington residents about crime and violence in our neighborhoods. This unique opportunity will help project partners to design and promote strategic initiatives that speak directly to the needs and desires of the community.
